Finding yourself as a blogger

What type of blogger am I, is something I know I've asked myself numerous times on my blogging journey, and if I'm completely honest, its something I'm still not sure I know the answer to.

We join this industry and are immediately asked "oh so what do you blog about?" or "what's your blogging niche then?" which immediately throws us in to this I must pick a specific topic frenzy for absolutely no reason.

I've been blogging for almost 2 and half years now and for at least the first year and half I wrote solely beauty posts and nothing else. It was what I felt most comfortable doing and what I originally started my blog for so I just never ventured from it. Other genres just didn't come naturally to me either, I know there was a point when I wanted to start writing more lifestyle based things but I just didn't know how. What knowledge or expertise did I have that anyone would be interested in? I was much better at describing the latest lipstick anyway!

I also had this mind set that people has subscribed to my blog in the first place to read my beauty content and so by posting about other things it might make them unsubscribe or stop reading. Oh how silly I was! We all start our blogs for ourselves and so should be writing about what we want to, and what makes us happy! Okay yes you might loose a few readers who were there just for a certain type of post you do, but the likely hood is that the majority will stick with you no matter what you decided to write about. I think that's the good thing about writing about all genres, that most of the time you'll have something that will appeal to everyone.
We aren't the same people as we were when we first started our blogs either, I've definitely changed a lot from the makeup obsessed young teen I was, to a now not so in to makeup young adult. Change is a natural progression and since I don't buy as much makeup as I used to, or experiment like I did before, it's only normal that my blog posts start to drift.

The posts on my blog are still predominantly beauty related because that's just who I am, but I also like writing about my feelings, experiences and thoughts now too. Travel is also a section on my blog that I'm hoping to develop, as someone who's not overly travelled, it won't be an immediate thing, but travel posts when I go somewhere new is something I'm trying to do.

So I guess to answer my own question of have I found myself as a blogger, no, not really. But that's not a bad thing! I've realised that I'm free to write about whatever genre I like, but do I fall under one main category? No, and I don't mind about that. If I wake up one morning and decide I want to write about a recipe, something I've never done before, then that's okay and I can go ahead because at the end of the day it's my blog and I'm writing for me!

  1. I feel like when us bloggers have different kind of content such as beauty as well as lifestyle and other things it can be hard to know who exactly we are as bloggers because we can't say we're a specific blogger but like you mentioned that's fine just be a mix of different things! lovely ready x

  2. I love to write about beauty products but I started writing about other things as well and also I incorporated fashion related posts. It's really important to post whatever we like and feel happy with. Happy Friday!! :)

  3. Loved the honesty of this! I feel the same way because I literally write about anything I want, no fixed category. But it doesn't have to be one category xx

  4. “it's my blog and I'm writing for me!” is something I often forget especially when a lot of popular products or events come about and you want to get on the scene to write about them. Great post Kate, love the photos and your honesty!

  5. I think no one ever truly does due to the reasons you have said. We all change and grow so much that we could never be always the same, and anyway, where would be the fun in that?
