4 things that cannot be allowed to ruin your birthday bash

It’s my party and I’ll cry if I want to”, the song goes. But we’d rather not end up crying on our own birthday bash if it’s all the same to you. It’s an unfortunate fact that as we get older our birthday seems less and less like something to celebrate. 16, 18 and 21 we see in with an enormous sense of celebration. The best years are ahead of us, after all, and we want to introduce ourselves to the real world in the most extravagant way possible. As we pass these halcyon years, however we can feel less and less inclined to celebrate with each passing year.

But just because we as a society have our hang ups about the aging process, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t celebrate another year of your fabulous self. Your birthday should be a celebration of your accomplishments, your friendships and the influence you’ve had on others around you, and what better way to do this than with a big birthday bash in which you gather together those closest to you for good food, ample drinks and a whole lot of merriment. Whether you’re a fresh faced teen or a young at heart “proper” grown up, never, ever let these things ruin your big birthday bash!

Your look
Of course, it’s perfectly natural to obsess over your look prior to the big day. You probably bought your dress months in advance, scoured Pinterest for hair ideas,  loaded up on makeup and subjected your skin to some serious pampering the day before. We all know the frustration when despite our best effort, the look just doesn’t come together on the day. Uncooperative hair and a spot right where you don’t want one can really sour your day and make you hate your hair and fall out of love with your makeup. Don’t let it get you down. Remember that everyone is their own worst critic and while people will be interested to see what you wear, they’re coming to see you, not your look.

The DJ
Nothing’s as soul crushing as an empty dance floor and a bad DJ can really rob the occasion of its energy. The important thing to remember is that you get what you pay for and a DJ is not an area where you should cut corners. A useful hack is to look for wedding DJs like Benny Smyth Wedding DJ. A good DJ should not only be able to calculate the right playlist to keep the dancefloor full at all times, they should also be a great emcee.

The birthday blues

The birthday blues are a perfectly natural feeling that sets in on the big day. They can arise out of a feeling that you haven’t accomplished what you wanted to by this age or even that you feel too much pressure to enjoy yourself. The best way to rise above it is to learn to accept it. It’s a common and fleeting feeling that most of us experience.

Your significant other or the ex
We all know that unique disappointment when our other half lets us down with either inconsiderate behaviour, a clearly improvised gift or failure to make the same effort for your birthday as you did for theirs. Worse still, nothing can ruin your day like a card or a gift from an ex you’d rather forget. In either case, you need to rise above it and focus on enjoying yourself. Compartmentalising your feelings isn’t easy, but it’s the only way to stop their behaviour from ruining your big day.

By following these 4 simple and easy things, you're guaranteed to have the best birthday bash ever!

  1. This was an interesting read. I must admit that now in my mid 20s I am not that eager to throw big birthday parties, mostly because I'd rather have a calm staycation/spa day at a hotel somewhere all on my own (or in a company of my immediate family/friends) and not worry about a huge guest list, IG-worthy cake or what my BF will/will not give me. In the end it is all about how YOU want to spend it, so it's good to be a little bit selfish and celebrate it the way YOU want to (after all it's just one day a year) xx

  4. Really enjoyed this read Kate- I'm never particularly fond of my birthday but that's just always the way I've been but I've seen so many people let their birthday be ruined by the first or fourth one when really they shouldn't be issues at all!x
