Makeup Revolution liquid highlighters

Wednesday 23rd of August was a pretty exciting day. Why, you might ask? Because it was the day that both Makeup Revolution and Barry M dropped their liquid highlighters. You're 100% lying if you say you haven't eyed up the Iconic London highlighter drops before because those things are serious goals, but I'm sure like most of us, one look at the price and you were running for the hills. I mean £30 for some liquid glitter, really?

So when I saw that two of my favourite affordable drugstore makeup brands were releasing their own budget versions, I'm sure you can imagine how over the moon I was. I didn't however expect that both brands would release them on the same day, so sorry bank account but of course I had to buy them both because I just knew if I waited they'd go out of stock. So a few clicks later and I'd ordered a few shades each of both brands new liquid highlighters, it just so happens though that I got the Makeup Revolution ones from Superdrug who were offering free next day delivery, thanks Superdrug, which is how I've managed to get my hands on them and get a post up for you so fast.

As I'm writing this it's currently Friday, the day this post will go up, because I got the highlighter drops yesterday and wanted to have then and today to fully test out each shade before I wrote about them. Hence why I'm panic writing this now with only 28 minutes until publishing time, just so I could get my full wear out of todays shade and formulate my opinion. Also I wanted to get this review out their asap for you people wanting to hear whether they're worth it first or see some swatches to decided on your favourite shade. Because let's be honest here, somebody had to take one for the team and tell the rest of us what they're like and I'll quite happily let that be me.
So it took all the strength in me to not order all the shades but I managed to just settle on two which from the swatches I'd seen over on Makeup Revolutions Instagram I thought would suit me the most. Those were starlight and champagne, the two lightest shades in the collection if you don't count unicorn elixir which is a bluey holographic shade. Starlight is a pearly pink shade with purple reflects and champagne is the more gold toned sister, so with the two of them I think I had both my pink and gold bases covered.

So I firstly tried wearing these straight over the top of my foundation as highlighters which for me personally wasn't my favourite way to use these. I don't know if it's because I wear such a thick and heavy foundation or that I'm not too experienced with liquid highlighters and was applying them wrong, but they just didn't sit well on top of my skin. I found they sort of sat on top of my foundation creating a line in it and also emphasised my pores.

Then today I tried giving them a go mixing them in to my products a bit more. So on the left of my face I used starlight and put it on my face before applying my foundation, and then on the right side of my face I used champagne which I actually mixed in to my foundation before applying it. This worked SO much better. Doing it both ways gave me such an effortless glow which really isn't achievable with any other products.

On the side where I put it on my skin before applying my foundation it gave a natural glow on the high points of my face and I actually found putting a powder highlight on top of it once all my makeup was done helped it pop even more. Then if it's a more all over dewy glow you're after, on the right side of my face where I mixed it straight in to my foundation would work best for you. I have never seen my makeup look like it did after trying this and it made me look a million times more awake and glowing. They gave my skin the refreshed look that it really needed!

What I like about these products are that there isn't any actual glitter in them, yet they are incredibly reflective. Even without the light they glow, but then when it does catch you at just the right angle, these highlights make you glow like a disco ball. I don't know what Makeup Revolution used in these for such a great shine, but whatever it is it's definitely worked!

The second picture showing just how much of a reflective shine they give when the light hits.

Both these shade's would suit all skin tones I think, however would probably be the best ones out of the range for pale skin. You could also try mixing some of the shades together to create your own highlight shade that you think suits you best. The possibilities are endless!

I think I'm going to try using these straight on top of makeup again but this time when I'm wearing a lighter coverage foundation or maybe bb cream and see how that works instead. So if you couldn't tell already, I'm totally in love with these and think for £6 they're such a bargain because considering how little you use, they could last you a lifetime! Make sure you get your hands on these if you can and tell me what you think.

Well done Makeup Revolution, another amazing product!

  12. They look nice, but I just cannot handle how they insist on 100% copying other brands, they could do themselves so good by changing it up a little! think I will go for the Barry M ones instead! :)

    1. I wouldn't say the barry m ones are any less of a copy of high end ones though? If anything, the Barry M packaging is more of a copy of the Iconic ones. X
