Misconceptions about bloggers

I've been blogging for well over a year now so I think I've become quite accustomed to these misconceptions people seem to have for bloggers. There are some people out there who just seem to be out to get us and with lots of untrue beliefs about us I thought I'd set the record straight!
We get sent free stuff all the time.
This is probably the most popular misconception out there, that the postman arrives at our door everyday with armfuls of pr packages just waiting for us to play with. I wish! I can tell you that blogging isn't all about the freebies and they don't come easy too! I've been blogging for over a year and have recently received my first ever PR package (which was amazing by the way and I'm insanely grateful!) you don't just start a blog and get sent free things all the time. That's just not how it works.

We're constantly invited to events.
Similarly to the last point we aren't always attending events! In fact I've never even been invited to one. I did however attend my first ever blogging event a few weeks a go which I bought a ticket for myself and had an amazing time. It was my first event in all my time blogging so don't think we're all at events with the Body shop every weekend or being invited for afternoon tea in fancy restaurants constantly.

We make it out to be much harder than it actually is.
Blogging is hard and that's a fact! Whether you want to admit it or not, putting together a post, writing it all up, getting photos to go along with it, scheduling it, promoting it, interacting with people on it, it all takes time! Time that the majority of us give up for free because we love it so much, so stop giving us so much stick!

We all want to turn it in to a career.
Believe it or not, not everyone wants to be the next Zoella and make a career out of their blog. Now I'm not saying I'd turn down the opportunity to make my blog my job, in all honesty it's not something I've ever really considered but I wouldn't say no I don't think. However some people don't want to monetise their blog, it's their hobby, something on the side, and they'd rather keep it that way.

We all constantly walk around with Instagramable makeup and clothes.
Just because we might write a post on the latest fashion trend and include some photos of us mid fashion shoot rocking our gear, doesn't mean we look like fashionistas 24/7. Nobody does! I know I for one spend more time in leggings and jumpers than I do nice clothes so don't be surprised if you see us with no makeup, hair up in a bun and wearing jogging bottoms.

If you are a fellow blogger please tell me if you relate to any of these misconceptions and if you were one of the people that believed any of these things then I hope I've changed your mind. As always, thanks for reading.

  1. I completely agree with you! There are so many things that bloggers get hate for, regardless of whether they're a small or bigger blogger. It's time that people realize the truth because blogging is a passion/hobby, just like any other. xx Nikita

  2. I haven't been blogging for long but I totally get your point about everyone thinking you want to make it a career. I think it's cool that people have but it's great as a hobby too. Before I started I didn't expect it to take a lot of effort but it's actually time consuming, I really love it though! Liv x

  19. This is literally so true I loved this post. So relevant and relatable lol. Honestly, I've been blogging for like 3 months now and I'm still so new, but I can see these misconceptions every single day. I always see bloggers making instagrams about blogger mail, and I'm wondering when that'll come for me lol, but yeah, blogging is HARD. Hard as shit actually. there's so many technical things behind the scenes people don't realize!

  28. This is 100% relatable and I completely agree that blogging is hard work!! I find it so hard to stay motivated because it takes so much time and a lot of work has to go into it before you reach a certain level of blogging. 33. So glad someone finally said it about how hard it actually is. I was talking to someone about how long and how much effort it takes to compose a blog post, edit pictures and make sure it looks right and thats before you've even done the leg work to promote it, they were shocked and tried to tell me that not every blogger must be like that! People do not realise how difficult it actually is! Yesssss not everyone wants to be Zoella, some of us just want a space to publish our thoughts.
(Also, the majority of bloggers don't even get PR packages so i'm pleased that made a point in this list)

  34. I'm aware you posted this a while ago but I've only just seen this..haha! I know people who say to me all the time 'how do I get free stuff like you' 'can you set me up a blog and get brands to send me things' like no. It doesn't work like that leave me alone! Blogging is so time consuming, most people can't stick to it for longer than a year because they find it too hard, too much work! So it is hard work but it is a passion a hobby and something enjoyable that we do.
