The beauty sponge VS the buffing brush

When I was first in to makeup you put your foundation on with either your hands or if you were one of the lucky ones who had a Real Techniques brush which were idolised at the time, then that. We all know that in recent times putting your makeup on with your hands is almost unheard of and its now the battle of the sponge and the brush.

The two products I've got on trial are the Real Techniques buffing brush and Real Techniques miracle complexion sponge.

The buffing brush:
Pro's;
- Blends my foundation really well without it looking cakey
- Gives a really full coverage look which is what I want
- Doesn't gather lots of product up in the brush hairs, the majority of product goes on the skin
- I've had for almost 2 years now and not one hair has fallen out, it's practically good as new

Cons;
- Can leave brush streaks in the foundation

The miracle complexion sponge:
Pro's;
- Doesn't leave streaky marks in the foundation
- Can get in to all the awkward places on your face like under your eyes better than a brush can

Con's;
- Soaks up lots of product
- Doesn't give me the fullest coverage
- I don't find it to be the softest sponge
- Get's makeup that it's soaked up all over my hand when I'm holding it

So overall as you can probably tell the buffing brush is the winner for me! It just seems to work the best for me and my skin and to be honest I think I'll always be a brush over sponge girl. I'd love to know which you prefer though and what you use to do you makeup. Thanks for reading.

  1. I've never tried a brush to blend in my foundation as I've only used the RT sponge and waaay before that I used to use my fingers. using a brush to blend in foundation sounds really good though. I definitely need to try a brush! lovely post x

  2. I must admit I am a blender girl! I wash mine all the time, and make sure they are properly wet when I use them, I just much prefer the finish of a sponge, so so nice! But I change my mind every other month so give it a while lol

  3. As much as I love the finish a sponge gives for foundation it takes so long I can just never be bothered. I think I like a mixture though, a buffing brush for foundation and a sponge for concealer, Real Techniques definitely do my favourite affordable brushes!

    1. Yeah a mixture is good! I like to quickly use the sponge over the top to smooth things out. X

  4. I totally agree with you, the Buffing Brush is great isn't it - yeah it can leave foundation slightly streaky but overall it's been in my makeup brush for a solid 4 ish years now and I love it - I'd never go back to put foundation on with my fingers (like I used to do with Dream Matte Mousse!!)
    ~ Great post! X

  6. This was really interesting to read! I've been trying sponges out lately instead but I still keep returning to brushes and I haven't really found a clear winner yet! So it was definitely useful to hear your thoughts x

    1. I should really try a few more sponges out I suppose, see if I can find one I love but I just love the results of a brush! X

  7. I love both of these! But like you I do sway more to the brush. My buffing brush has lasted me such a long time, way over four years now which is insane and I should probably get a new one hahah, but it still looks as good as new and works a treat. But I do love my sponge for my concealer and when I do use it for foundation it creates almost an airbrushed finish to my base which I do really like as well xx

  8. I love using both of these, but I definitely prefer the brush too as it gives me a better finish. I love using the blending sponge for concealer, as like you said it really does get into all the hard to reach parts of your face!

  9. I love the buffing brush and out of all the sponges I have tried the RT Miracle Complexion sponge is my favourite but I always go back to buffing brushes in the end. Great comparison post, thank you for sharing xxx

  11. I always use a brush, I find it easier to work with and I don't seem to get along with sponges, they seem to soak up a lot of product and I have to re-apply which takes me even more time. Great comparison post :)

  17. The buffing brush was my first foundation brush I ever got too and still the one I use today! Although I've had mine for 3 years now and it's pretty gross! I haven't tried the sponge but love my beauty blender as well, maybe that's one to try instead?

  19. For me I change up which I use to apply my foundation with quite regularly, for me I will always be a brush girl as I don't rate the real techniques sponge xxx

  20. I use both of these to apply my makeup, I find applying it with the brush first, then patting with the sponge to get rid of the brush lines really creates a flawless base.
